Questions about Buddha amulets

Q01. What are the taboos and precautions regarding amulets?

The most important thing about wearing Thai amulets is maintaining a grateful and kind heart; as the saying goes, sincerity brings results! Many devotees worry about taboos when wearing amulets after acquiring them. However, the most crucial aspect of wearing an amulet is our own heart. First, we must believe, and then we must abide by the rules. Because of belief, we can restrain ourselves and better regulate our words and actions. This is the original intention and purpose of Thai amulets! Many people worry that they cannot do what is right or that they might do something disrespectful to the amulet, bringing them bad luck. These are all unnecessary worries. As long as you have Buddha in your heart and accumulate good deeds, there's no need to worry excessively. Taboos are simply common precautions; just pay attention to them in daily life. The Buddha knows what is in your heart, and so does the amulet.

Q02. Is there a difference in the order of the statues of deities worshipped at home and the amulets worn around the neck?

The order of wearing amulets and offering amulets is roughly the same.
The highest-ranking deity or Buddha should wear the most central ornament and be worshipped at the highest level.
The order of the status of gods and Buddhas is as follows:
1. Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats (such as the Emerald Buddha, Sivali, and Khun Phaen Buddha) hold the highest status.
2. Highly respected monks and masters among Buddhist disciples (such as Ajahn Toh and Luang Phor Pern).
3. Celestial Gods (Four-Faced God, Ganesha, Rahu, Zephyrus, etc.)
4. Immortals and Great Gods (such as Lu Shi, General Kun Ping, and the Savings Elder)
5. Mythical Beasts and Other Categories (Tiger Head Brand, Balaji, etc.)
*Kuman Thong should be offered separately and worn on the waist or in a bag.

Q03. Do I need to recite mantras before wearing a Buddha amulet each time? If so, what are some common mantras?

It depends on your personal habits. If you find chanting mantras every time you wear a Buddha amulet too troublesome, or if you are in a hurry to leave, you can hold the Buddha amulet with both hands and gently touch it to the top of your head before putting it on.

If reciting scriptures or mantras:

1. First, place the Buddha amulet in your palms and put your hands together. Then, raise the Buddha amulet and gently place it on your head as if you are praying.

2. Then read it.

3. And sincerely pray to the gods and Buddhas for their protection before wearing it.

4. When you get home and take it off, you can hold the amulet with your hands clasped together and recite the scriptures again to thank the gods and Buddhas for the peace they have given you today.

Actually, chanting mantras is a Buddhist ritual, meaning to greet the gods and Buddhas, telling them that we have respectfully invited the amulet, and then the gods and Buddhas will use the power of the master's blessing within the amulet to help us. The mantras don't need to be chanted frequently; they are only needed when wearing the amulet for the first time or in emergency situations to increase the communication and harmony between you and the amulet, and temporarily enhance its efficacy.

Q04. Must I observe the Five Precepts when wearing a Buddhist amulet?

The five precepts in Buddhism are: 1. Do not kill; 2. Do not steal; 3. Do not commit adultery; 4. Do not lie; 5. Do not drink alcohol. These five precepts are the basic precepts for the fourfold assembly of Buddhist disciples .

Anyone can wear a Buddhist amulet. There are no strict requirements or special instructions that require the wearer to observe the Five Precepts if they are not a Buddhist.

However, despite this, it is best for the wearer to uphold the Five Precepts, maintain mindfulness, and do good deeds when wearing Buddhist sacred objects in order to receive more blessings.

When wearing a Buddhist amulet, believers must never violate the " precept against sexual misconduct " among the Five Precepts , otherwise it will be considered a great disrespect . Sexual misconduct, also known as illicit sexual relations, means that one should absolutely not touch another person's wife (or husband) and should not disrupt another person's relationship. The precept against sexual misconduct is one of the Five Precepts , and violating it is a grave mistake. In short, maintaining right mindfulness, right faith, and right view is true practice and great wisdom.

Q05. What should I do if I violated a taboo by wearing a Buddha amulet?

First, it's important to determine whether your transgression was unintentional or deliberate. For example, if you accidentally walk under a clothes rack on your way downstairs and forget to put your amulet inside your clothes, or if you forget to remove your amulet while drinking, this is unintentional. However, if you intentionally wear your amulet while drunk and then go to bed with someone while still wearing it, that's deliberate and a serious offense! In short, if you violated the taboo of wearing an amulet due to a momentary forgetfulness—note that it was a momentary forgetfulness rather than a deliberate transgression—you only need to sincerely repent to the amulet, light some incense or play some scriptures, and promise not to repeat the same mistake. In the future, you can have your amulet blessed again by a master. But if you knowingly violated the taboo, then you are simply not suitable to wear an amulet.

Q06. Is it permissible to use the toilet while wearing a Buddha amulet?

Yes, that's fine. When using the toilet, simply tuck the amulet around your neck inside your shirt, avoiding direct contact with the foul air, as a sign of respect for the deities. As long as you have respect for the deities, they won't blame you.

Q07. Should you not walk under a clothes rack while wearing a Buddha amulet?

This involves a matter of traditional beliefs. In the past, many Chinese people were superstitious about women's clothing, especially underwear. This was because women's clothing was considered to be stained with blood and impurities during menstruation. They believed that if washed women's clothing was hung on a clothesline to dry, and a Buddha amulet was walked over from underneath, the amulet would lose its power and resonance. However, this worry is completely unnecessary. Nowadays, with high-rise buildings everywhere, clothes can be hung to dry anywhere. If you walk over a clothesline, you can place the Buddha amulet inside your shirt. If you accidentally step over the clothesline, simply silently repent to the Buddha amulet after realizing it; there will be no harm done. After all, ignorance is no excuse! As long as your mind is pure and kind, the gods and Buddhas will not blame you.

Q08. Is it necessary to fulfill vows when worshipping Thai deities? Is it true that not fulfilling vows will bring bad luck and misfortune?

Thai Buddhism first grants you what you desire/wish, then guides you to become a "good person," helping you improve and, in turn, helping others to improve as well! Therefore, the best way to fulfill your vows is to give up bad habits or behaviors, do more good deeds, make small donations, and donate supplies to give back to society. This not only accumulates blessings for the gods but also for yourself. Remember, we do good deeds not to receive blessings, but to genuinely help others in need! The gods and Buddhas are very magnanimous and will not punish you for not fulfilling your vows.

Q09. Why have things become increasingly unlucky for me since I started wearing a Buddha amulet?

First, be mindful of whether you are disrespecting the amulet. In fact, when devotees first begin wearing amulets, there is a process of clearing away negative energy and karmic obstacles. Of course, this is also closely related to one's accumulated merit. When you first start wearing an amulet, it will first regulate the negative energy within you, that is, eliminate karmic obstacles. Devotees should maintain mindfulness and a compassionate attitude when wearing an amulet, rather than simply blaming or complaining. Dialectically speaking, the process of the amulet clearing away negative energy is also a form of spiritual practice and a test for the devotee. If things still don't go smoothly, it may be due to karmic creditors. Doing more good deeds and seeking blessings for yourself, in conjunction with the amulet, can help resolve your own karmic issues.

Q10. Is it true that you can't eat beef if you wear a Buddha amulet?

Yes, they can eat it. Thai monks eat whatever they receive as alms; they don't distinguish between different kinds. Both vegetarians and non-vegetarians consume meat. There is no saying or rule in Theravada Buddhism that "wearing a Buddhist amulet means you can't eat beef," and Theravada Buddhists are permitted to eat beef.

Q11. Why did the amulet not work at all?

It's important to understand that everything has a cause and effect; amulets only provide assistance. For example, if you wear an amulet with the power to cleanse negative karma, it might break down a major misfortune into several smaller ones, minimizing the impact of the major negative karma and thus averting disaster. For instance, an amulet might transform a potential bloodshed into a financial loss or a minor fall. Imagine if you weren't wearing an amulet and were in a serious traffic accident, but only suffered a minor car accident. While both are undesirable outcomes, which would you choose?

Q12 . Is it okay to wear a Thai amulet into a Chinese temple?

Of course you can. Buddhism transcends national boundaries; all teachings originate from it. Wearing a Buddhist amulet is permitted when visiting any temple.

Q13 . Is it okay to wear a Buddha amulet to a bar?

Yes, it's fine, as long as you don't get drunk. If you know you'll drink excessively or always get drunk, please leave the amulet at home, or carefully place it in your bag unless absolutely necessary (the bag should not be placed on the ground). In the Theravada Buddhist tradition, the Five Precepts are: abstaining from killing, abstaining from stealing, abstaining from sexual misconduct, abstaining from lying, and abstaining from intoxicants. The precept against intoxicants, which is the cause of indulgence, is sometimes translated as the precept against drinking alcohol. Intoxicants include grain wines, fruit wines, etc. Any intoxication or indulgence resulting from the intentional consumption of these alcoholic beverages is considered a cause of indulgence. This precept also includes prohibiting the use of all recreational narcotics and drugs, such as marijuana, ecstasy, and hallucinogens. Luang Phor Koon once said in a teaching: "If you have an amulet, don't boast about how powerful it is. Don't drink alcohol. Don't have affairs with other women. This amulet is a reminder to yourself . This amulet prevents you from doing bad things. It's not that having an amulet makes you powerful. That's incorrect." If a devotee gets drunk while wearing an amulet, it violates the "Five Precepts," and the amulet will become ineffective in a short period of time. The amulet's efficacy will also be reduced after drinking alcohol. Therefore, it is recommended that devotees not overindulge in alcohol while wearing an amulet, and drink in moderation.

Q14. Where should I put the Buddha amulet after I get home?

If you have a shrine at home, you can place the amulet on it or in a clean cabinet that is above waist height (if the cabinet faces the main entrance, hanging a Buddha amulet there can have a protective effect). Remember, never place your feet on sacred objects or allow them to be seen in sexual activity!

Q15. Can my child wear a Buddhist amulet?

All living beings are equal; regardless of age or gender, anyone can wear amulets. For children's health and safety, amulets with protective and health-promoting properties (such as Somdej amulets) are recommended. For children's academic success, consider amulets featuring Ganesha or Lersi. For more information, please contact us!

Q16: Does having a verification card mean the card is genuine?

The experimental amulet cards became popular around 2016-17 AD. Their main purpose was for associations composed of different Thais to "verify the temple, master, and year of the amulet." By 2018-19, they had become a standard package in amulet markets around the world. However, temples originally did not provide verification cards. In the past, people would personally go to the temple to obtain the amulet and take photos and videos as proof. Later, as many masters passed away and the demand from the Chinese market increased, many associations began to offer verification card services.

Among them , Samakom and Thaprachan are the most famous, but since they are ultimately composed of people, have they ever made mistakes? The answer is yes, they have. Whether it's getting a Buddha amulet from a temple but being unable to get a card from the association, or having been involved in scandals about misjudging the authenticity of Buddha amulets, we can only say that "because they are currently the most credible and experienced associations and experts in Thailand, they are still a strong reference."

Q17. Are there any rules about wearing an even or odd number of amulets?

As long as the amulets are balanced and aesthetically pleasing, there are no taboos regarding whether to wear an even or odd number of amulets on the same chain.

Q18. A friend gave me a Buddha amulet a long time ago/I haven't worn it for several years. Can I wear it now? Will it lose its effectiveness? Does it need to be blessed again?

All amulets and sacred objects undergo continuous blessing by the masters during the material collection process. After completion, a consecration ceremony is held, inviting Luang Phors or Ajarns from various regions to jointly bless and consecrate them. The power of this blessing lasts a lifetime. Therefore, if you have an amulet that you haven't worn for a long time, you can wear it whenever you wish!

Q19. Is there a rule that a Buddha amulet must be worn outside of clothing?

Basically, there are no restrictions or rules on wearing amulets. You can wear them inside or outside your clothes, or worry about them touching your chest. Just wear them with sincerity.

Q20. Will cracks or chips on a Buddha amulet affect its power?

Generally speaking, cracks or chips in a Buddha amulet do not affect its efficacy or power. If they do have an impact, it is only on the amulet's appearance. This is because the power of many Buddha amulets does not come from the surface but from the blessed powder materials.

If the damage is minor or not very serious, it doesn't necessarily need to be repaired. However, if you are overly concerned about or demanding regarding the condition of your amulet, you can have it repaired at a temple. Many temples in Thailand take in severely damaged amulets, repair them, and even re-bless them.

Q21. Can dogs wear Buddhist amulets?

In the Buddha's eyes, all things possess spirit and beauty, and all beings are equal. Dogs can naturally wear Buddhist amulets. However, if you put a Buddhist amulet on your dog, you must do so with righteous thoughts and a sincere heart of reverence for the Buddha, rather than treating it as a joke or prank.

Q22. Which amulet is the most effective?

There is no omnipotent amulet in the world. Whether it is effective or not is related to your personal cultivation! As the saying goes, "supernatural powers cannot overcome karma." According to Buddhist teachings, all blessings and misfortunes come from the flow of karma in this life and past lives. Therefore, do more good deeds and accumulate more merit, and blessings will increase and misfortunes will disappear.

There was a nobleman in the Thai royal family who committed numerous atrocities, including raping women and shooting people. He was once shot and killed while causing trouble in a bar. At the time, he was wearing a Somdej amulet by Ajahn Toh.

Does Ajahn Toh's amulet lack power? It's because he committed so many evil deeds that even Buddha couldn't bear to watch. Absolutely no amulet in the world is a magic key; no amulet can guarantee you meteoric success and abundant wealth.

When acquiring amulets, one must fully consider their financial capacity. Don't be greedy and end up impoverished after acquiring an amulet. Remember, there is no best master or the most efficacious amulet; the best amulet is the one that suits you.

Therefore, before acquiring amulets, devotees should first understand their purpose and what specific effects they wish to obtain, rather than being greedy and blindly seeking multiple amulets.

Every master's amulets have efficacy, but their effects may be more pronounced in certain areas. It's important to understand that even with the same amulet, not everyone will experience the same results. The amulet only provides assistance; its effectiveness is often related to the wearer's own good karma.

Q23. Do amulets need to be blessed by a master frequently?

Buddhist amulets are not like mobile phone batteries; they don't need to be charged frequently. The best blessing you can receive after acquiring an amulet is to uphold the Buddha's principles of conduct and perform good deeds. That is the best way.
