【Introduction to Wat Sothon】Wat Sothonwararam (abbreviated as Wat Sothon; วัดโสธรวรารามวรวิหาร) is one of the oldest temples in Thailand and a spiritual home for the people of Chachoengsao Province.

This place enshrines the most important monk of Chachoengsao Province, Sothong, attracting many devout Buddhists to come and worship.

Sotong Buddha drifted in

During the second Burmese invasion of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, Buddhist temples were looted, especially gold Buddha statues, which were melted down for gold. To protect these statues from destruction, the Thai people coated three of them with mud and placed them on rafts to float down the Bang Pakong River. The Luang Phor Sothorn Buddha was discovered by local residents of Chachoengsao. They tried to pull the statue ashore by tying it with rope, but all their efforts failed. Then, a high-ranking monk chanted prayers and hung a talisman on the Buddha's hand. Miraculously, the statue was easily pulled ashore and enshrined at Wat Pho, built in the late Ayutthaya period. Hong (วัดหงษ์), later renamed Sothong Temple, became a very popular place of worship.

Phra Buddha Sothon (พระพุทธโสธร) is cast in bronze and measures 1.65 meters wide and 1.98 meters high. It is revered by the locals and, along with the Emerald Buddha (พระแก้วมรกต) and Phra Buddha Chinnarat (พระพุทธชินราช), is known as one of the "Three Most Efficacious Buddhas of Thailand".

Wat Sothong is now divided into a new temple and an old temple. The new temple is magnificent and incorporates a postmodern marble architectural style, which is very impressive under the sunlight. It was built in 1996, with the foundation stone laying ceremony personally presided over by the former King Rama IX. In 2006, Princess Sirindhorn presided over the inauguration ceremony and officially listed it as a royal temple of Thailand.

It is said to have cost 2.5 billion baht to build, blending traditional Thai temple style with a symmetrical structure. The highest point is 85 meters high, with five layers of flying eaves and golden eaves and corners. The total weight is 77 kilograms (more than 44 million baht). The high construction cost was accumulated from the donations of the old temple.

The main hall, with its high ceiling and marble walls, houses 18 Buddha statues, with the Sothong Buddha being the tallest one in the center. Worshippers must not be taller than the Buddha statue and must kneel before moving forward and backward, only rising after retreating to the back of the altar; these actions represent respect.
